Crankcase ventilation.

There are 3 nightmare scenarious in my life as a petrolhead.

– Gas goin’ pricey .
– Unavoidable circumstances which forces me to let someone else to drive my car.
– Not-deleted crankcase ventilation of the engine.

What is this about.
Let’s keep it simple in explanation. When the engine is running, internal combustion creates small amount of pressure in the crank case since some of the gases leaks between piston rings and the sleeves. Worst thing is that pressure is continual and have to go somewhere otherwise … (well guess what will happen if you hold your gases… ) . That’s why crank ventilation is needed.

Car manifacturers have 3 options, letting those oil gases in the cockpit (yeah, sure), letting them out in the enviroment ( Some Russian car brands do it this way from the factory ) and letting them back at the engine.

And this is bad, because … ?

You may haven’t noticed but N/A engines feels faster and powerful durring winter.
That’s because of the cold air. As air gets colder, it gets denser which mean more oxygen for your engine.
People usually make some mods as cold air intake, bigger throttle body, cone filter, cylinder head porting, but everything is pointless if your engine is backing up some hot oil vapours straight to the intake manifold.

  1. Vapors are hot. They doesn’t consist any oxygen.
  2. They are reducing octane rating of the fuel you use.
  3.  Oil vapor stick on the walls, which will lead to constriction and clogging = less air in the engine.

What should i do about it ?

Remove it. Come on, let’s be reasonable. No one wants low mpg and bad performance of the engine.
The bad stuff is coming from the valve cover. Just find the nozzle and decide what to do.Scooby dooby doo.
Bung the other holes. (Bang the other h*es said autocorrect)

There are 2 ways – oil catch tank or letting gases in out in the enviroment.
Oil catch tanks are nothing more than a canister with a metal mesh inside which is turning vapors into liquid. You are drawing this liquid from the tank on each oil change and you are ready to go.

Letting gases out is probably cheapest way. You can choose between hose going somewhere under the engine or just small filter.
Don’t let anybody know. People will start blaming you for trashing the nature.

Plot twist: Car will run better.
You can thank us later.
